It's Pączki Day again!I wrote about pączki last year, so I won't repeat myself.
However, I had determinted that the "pączki line" now extends west to Lansing and Jackson--an hour away from Hamtramck. This Bud's for youhttp://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/04/29/booze_makes_you_clever/ "...a Swedish team has shown that mice fed with moderate amounts of alcohol grew new nerve cells in the brain..." Happy Paczki Day!That's "punch-key" which is the plural of paczek ("pohn-check"); so there's no such word as "punch-keys", paczki is already plural "I'm not eating any paczki today". Anyway, paczki are a jelly-filled donut consumed on Fat Tuesday (today). They are special in that they have even more calories than your regular donut. Supposedly, the tradition of paczki started because the cooks had to use up all their lard, sugar, etc. before Lent started on Ash Wednesday. Paczki Day originated in Polish communities--Hamtramck here in SE Michigan, but Paczki are enjoyed throughout the area today. However, just an hour to the west in Lansing, there is no celebration (and the people of Lansing are thinner today as a result).
